Locality:
Opposite Kaupulehu Preserve, along Mamalahoa Highway (190) at 12 miles NE of Kailua Kona (by 28 mile marker).
Plant Description:
Tree 6 m tall, 25-30 cm dbh, old leaves yellowing, bark rough, blackish. Corolla bright orange-red, capsules reddish, drying brown and splitting, 4-5 seeded. Locally scarce, no regeneration observed.
Habitat:
Remnant of dry forest with Diospyros sandwicensis dominant.
Associated Species:
Colubrina, Canthium, Nototrichium, etc. with understory of introduced Pennisetum setaceum, over recent (1801) a'a lava flow.
