Plant Description:
Plants originally brought from roadside (where naturalized?) in Lawai Valley below headquarters of the (then ) Pacific Tropical Botanical Garden in 1986.
Summer flowering ornamental. In bloom to 80 cm tall. Crown of bulb visible above ground. Leaves ± equitant, 10 or more per bulb, to 3 cm broad at base, 5-6 cm broad above middle, medium green with slight gloss above, paler, duller, more yellow-green below. Inflorescence: scape to 55 cm, solid, green finely striated and with glaucous bloom; floral bracts like onion skin, brown transparent in places; flowers up to 16 in a head; tube curving, to 19 X 0.4 cm, green at base to yellowish to white at apex; perianth lobes white, 11 X 0.4 cm, arched and curling pendant, well seperate from corona; corona 2 cm deep, erect in evening upon opening, by morning spread nearly flat with expansion of stamens; stamens to 4.7 cm, white at base with remainder bright green; anthers to 2 cm, thread-like, with pollen yellowish to orange; stigma 9 cm, nearly white at base, to dark green at apex; ovary 1 X 1 cm, medium green, 4-7 per locule, in pairs one above another, white; fragrance in evening, of white chocolate; at height of bloom in Aug.-Sept.
