   Internships and Learning Opportunities

High School Summer 2026 Internship

The Kampong of The National Tropical Botanical Garden located in Coconut Grove is hosting a paid summer internship for high school students entering 10th -12th grade in the 2026-2027 school year. Students are expected to commit to 7 weeks from Monday, June 15 – Friday, July 31, 2026, Monday – Thursday, 9:00 am – 2:00 pm.

Join us for an immersive 7 week summer internship where you’ll become a botanical garden designer, plant curator, and educator all in one! Working alongside our horticulture and education teams, you’ll embark on an exciting challenge: designing a brand-new garden zone that showcases the incredible ways plants have adapted to survive in diverse environments – from deserts to rainforests and beyond. You’ll explore our existing garden, learn the science behind plant adaptations, master the principles of landscape design, hand select plants that tell compelling survival stories, and create an interpretation plan, complete with educational programming for future visitors. Whether you’re interested in environmental science, landscape architecture, education, or simply love plants, this internship offers a unique opportunity to leave your mark on our garden while developing skills that will grow with you long after summer ends.

Interns will:

  • work directly with staff from The Kampong and experts in relevant fields to research, design and install a new garden zone
  • learn how to conduct research, plan and implement a garden design and communicate their work to a varied audience
  • showcase their experience at the end of the summer through programming at The Kampong, including a presentation
  • receive a stipend of $2000.00

Requirements:

  • must be at least 16 years of age on or before June 15, 2026
  • be able to get to The Kampong located in Coconut Grove on time for the start of each day
  • commit to the full 7 weeks designated for this program
  • complete and submit the application by Sunday, March 15, 2026, 11:59 pm
  • have a teacher or mentor submit a one page letter of recommendation directly to the program coordinator by Sunday, March 15, 2026, 11:59 pm

Applications will be reviewed starting March 16. Late or incomplete applications will be considered on a rolling basis. Select applicants will be invited to participate in a virtual interview before final selections are made in late March.
