Offered in Miami, Florida November 8-14, 2026
The Hawaii-based National Tropical Botanical Garden (NTBG) will offer its Environmental Journalism Program in Miami, Florida on November 8-14, 2026. Designed for professional journalists (staff or freelance) working in print, broadcast, online, and other media, the immersive program provides a background in tropical botany, ecology, and biocultural conservation with a progressive approach that honors Indigenous legacies and integrates cultural values. The program is structured to enhance reporting on environmental issues with a focus on tropical natural systems and the importance of plant science, conservation, and biodiversity.
This year, NTBG’s Environmental Journalism Program will be offered at NTBG’s Florida garden, The Kampong, located in Coconut Grove, Miami. Since the program began in 1999, it has been held 20 times in Hawaii. This year’s Miami offering represents an expansion of the program.
The Environmental Journalism Program at The Kampong will incorporate NTBG’s extensive living collections, cultural and historical resources, as well as the International Center for Tropical Botany at The Kampong. The program will also feature off-site visits to sites dedicated to plant conservation and research, environmental stewardship, and other locations featuring the distinctive biodiversity and nature of the Miami/South Florida area. Program presenters will include NTBG staff and other scientists, educators, and experts in botany, horticulture, taxonomy, coastal ecology, climate science, and related fields.
The Kampong, established and built as the home of botanist and explorer David Fairchild, is known for its hundreds of palms, fruit bearing trees, and other tropical plants. Since becoming part of NTBG in 1984, The Kampong has provided a richly varied indoor and outdoor living classroom in which to study and experience critical concepts of tropical botany and horticulture, biocultural conservation, habitat restoration, and tropical agriculture.
NTBG’s Environmental Journalism Program will be offered from Sunday, November 8 through Saturday, November 14. Applications will be accepted beginning in August. Check NTBG’s Education page and social media accounts (Bluesky, Facebook, X) for updates.
