Hills above Suva, Tamavua. Garden on south-facing slopes. Rich reddish soil. Sea level.
Plant Description:
Cultivated, erect, multi-stemmed shrub 1.8m tall. Stem greyish at very base; longer internodes near base, stem dark olive green with warty dark brown lenticels, internodes swollen dark brown. Pitch solid, cream turning yellowish or reddish. Upper half of stem with much shorter internodes and markedly zigzag and darker brown; upper most twigs almost black, or yellow-green with purple-black nodes. Sheathing petioles purple-black; normal petioles yellow-green. Leaves dull medium green above; dull pale yellow-green beneath. Peduncles erect, yellow green. Spikes cream at anthesis. Stems pungent aromatic. N.V. "green stemmed kava".
