Ka`upulehu Preserve, at mile 28 along Hawaii Belt Road (Mamalahoa Hwy 190), ca. 10 miles E of Kailua-Kona.
Plant Description:
Tree 5 m with dense canopy, trunk 12 dm diam., bark black. Dioecious, female flowers fragrant, with pink corolla. Fruit red when ripe, fleshy, seed brown. Dominant, endemic.
Habitat:
Dry forest over a`a lava flow.
Associated Species:
With Diospyros sandwicensis, Santalum paniculatum, Sophora chrysophylla, and Colubrina oppositifolia.
