tree, 5 m tall, trunk and branches black-brown with lichen [Wood 11731], in fruit maturing yellow or orange, dominant component of forest, seed collected

Diospyros sandwicensis mixed mesic forest.
Associated Species:
W/ Alyxia oliviformis, Ochrosia compta, Reynoldsia sandwicensis, Xylosma hawaiiense, Metrosideros polymorpha var. glaberrima, Metrosideros waialealae var. fauriei, Nestegis sandwicensis, Pittosporum glabrum, Bobea elatior, Bobea sandwicensis, Hedyotis terminalis, Psychotria hawaiiensis, Psychotria mauiensis.
