Plant Description:
Plants of 4 m height forming thicket ca. 4 m wide, with bright green or maroon leaves, from distance appears bronze. Pseudostems pale green finely speckled and veined bronze, glabrous, glossy. Leaves planar; petiole colored as pseudostem, but with ligule maroon to reddish; lamina above pale to dark green, or washed maroon, or with maroon margin, glossy, with midrib pale green to pink to maroon, striped or not; lamina below bright yellow green to green to bronzed, glossy, woth midrib yellow green to pink, striped or not. Inflorescences though numerous (12+ at time of flowering) inconspicuous, hidden among leaves; infl. terminal, erect; peduncle pale green with dark green flecks, pubescence white or brownish; rachis pale green with darker flecks to whitish where inserted at bract; cincinnal bracts 8-10, distichous, with straight margins, outside pale green to bluish-green with some bronze overlay, dull at base to glossy at tip, inside pale greenish-pink to deep maroon, somewhat glossy; basal bract sterile, terminating in a leaf conspicuously striped laterally maroon and green, glossy; flowers not resu-pinate; perianth to 5.8 cm, whitish at base through pale green to lime green at apex, with some pink tint throughout, glossy; ovary duller, pale yellow with slight pink tinge; fused sepals with apices reflexed; anthers connivant inside perianth apex; staminode with apex shallowly tri-dentate or rounded; drupe to 2.4 X 1.3 cm, turkey red, somewhat glossy, most with dried perianth still weakly attached through agency of persistant pistil; plant apparently sterile.
