National Park of American Samoa, To`aga site, between coastal road and shoreline, near west end of park; elev. 3-4 m.
Plant Description:
Sparsely branching shrub 1.5 m with arching branches, leaves green w red margins. Corolla & filaments white, style purple, ripe fruits red, ovoid. Flowers with unpleasant sour odor (5 pm). Over coral sand & basalt boulders. Polynesian introduction. Samoan name: ti.
Habitat:
Coastal strand forest.
Associated Species:
With Hernandia n ymphaeifolia, Thespesia populnea, Pandanus tectorius, Tournefortia argentea, Morinda, mixed with plantings of Cocos, Artocarpus & Musa, understory of Vigna, Phymatosorus, Tacca, Epipremnum.
