Plant Description:
"Bulb" with thixk papery bracts, the bulb to 50 cm tall and 17 cm wide; roots spring from base of bulb in habit like coconut; roots arise yellowish to white, push into ground, mature green, to finger width. Leaves: to 95 cm, 18 cm wide, forming trough; new leaves with glaucous tinge; blade above dull medium green, paler in center, the lateral veins fine and dark, lamina with rusty spots; below somewhat darker; where leaves join stem the cups water-filled; new foliage mostly upright, older leaves bend and touch ground. Inflorescence: heads mostly at level with foliage tips, some above; scape 120-150 cm x 4.5 broad, solid, flattened, pale green, glossy, interior white, spongy and very juicy; floral bracts 2, like onion skin, in places transparent; numerous smaller interfloral bracts curling, white to pale brown, some notably petaloid; heads with 20-30 (to 54) flowers, sometimes with two flowers with tubes joined to just below perianth segments; flowers to 24 x 15 cm; pedicels to 6 cm long, green, glossy; ovary to 1.5 x 0.8 cm, green, glossy; tube to 9 cm long, paler, more yellow-green, glossy; segments 6, white, crystalline, slightly to strongly reflexed, 8-9 x 1.2 cm, the stamens attached to center of each at base; stamens: form upright crown on opening, when expanded stand at 45° angles to axis; filaments 6.5 cm, yellow at base shortly becoming white, to pink-violet for 2/3 length; anther with yellow pollen, versatile, 1.1 cm long; pistil: to 16 cm long, white in tube becoming dark wine-purple at apex, mostly shorter than stamens in flower but sometimes slightly longer; flowers of strong, sweet fragrance. In fruit scapes mostly bend to ground where seeds deposited; fruits fig-like in shape, pale yellow-green to whitish, glossy; seeds maturing to 5.5 x 3 cm, rounded, flattened, pale grey. Numerous plantlets on ground, or germinating in pools in leaf axils.
