Ethnobotanical Notes:
Fruits used to prepare telib, fermented breadfruit, in southern islands.Trees grow wild on limestone karst of Peleliu and Rock Islands and on limestone outcroppings on volcanic usland of Babeldaob. Trees are also cultivated in coastal areas of Babeldaob. Fruit bats observed carrying sections of fruits as they flew, distributing seeds throughout the islands. On Babeldaob the name Ebiei refers to both trees and fruit, while dekar refers to the seeds. Peleliuans call trees and fruit dekar. The name Meduuliou means 'breadfruit of below', found mainly in the southern, lower regions of Palau. Informant: Naito Soaladaob. Remove seeds from ripe fruits, boil in salted water. To roast after boiling, peel brown skin and riast on racks above a fire. Trees of Ebiei or Meduu (seedless breadfruit) are used for house construction and canoes. Informant: Melvin Toribiong. Wood of Ebiei was desired for canoes because it is lightweight. Only old men now know how to make canoes, but no one uses them today as modern boats with motors are preferred. A traditional canoe is being constructed at the Senior Center in Koror.
