Plant Description:
Fruits ovoid, 1-4 per branch. Very spiny with ~7 cm elongated, flexible, pointed sections. Pronounced long green stigma turning golden-colored then brown. Heavy latex when cut when immature. Many large seeds with light-brown, thin, brittle outer seed coat. Inner seed coat is buff or tan, adheres to seed. Green with white flesh. Seeds often sprout within ripe fallen fruits. Leaves large, moderately dissected with four pairs of lobes. Profuse long white hairs on upper veins. Leathery, brittle blades. Tree 5 m. DBH 19.0 cm. Original material from Tahiti, Society Is. Seeds can be boiled in salted water for 15-20 minutes. Similar to chestnuts in texture and flavor. NTBG acc.#770444000
