Locality:
Kawaiiki Valley, up valley from mouth of Koaie confluence and along north facing slopes above stream.
Plant Description:
Tree is tagged #2, ca 5 m tall, healthy, no flower or fruit, cutting collected for graft, 3 trees in area.
Habitat:
Brown granular soil with leaf litter, 30° north, 60 % of the day in open sun [potentially], upper forested slope above drainage. Degraded mixed mesic forest.
Associated Species:
Diospyros sandwicensis, Metrosideros polymorpha, Pisonia sandwicensis, Xylosma hawaiiense, Antidesma platyphylla, Alectryon macrococcus, Psydrax odorata, Dodonaea viscosa, Hibiscus waimeae, Pleomele aurea.
Comments:
the number of Kokia in the over-all canyon region appears to have dwindled down to these three in Kawai`iki & the single tree in Koai’e [4 total]. A survey for evaluating the conservation status of any other remaining individuals in the canyon should be a priority. Continue seed collections from all wild individuals.
