Plant Description:
Herb with erect stems to 4 m high forming dense clumps, with lateral branches. Inflorescence bracts green becoming red in fruit, calyx green, labellum pinkish white. Fruits white, splitting to reveal black seeds. Invasive, common in clearings and along streams.
Habitat:
Evergreen forest and swamp forest.
Associated Species:
With canopy of Neubergia, Horsfieldia irya, Terminalia carolinensis, Campnospermum, understory with Dendrocnide, Angiopteris, Ponapea, Boehmeria, numerous ferns and vines including Piper and Freycinetia.
