A Lei for Resilience

Lei Legacies: September 2024

2024 marks the 60th anniversary of the National Tropical Botanical Garden. Every month we will weave a lei for you, one that brings together plants and stories from our five botanic gardens. Created by Aunty Wendy Miguel of Ke‘anae, Maui, September’s lei highlights kūpeʻe (Nerita polita), a beloved marine snail. Found near the shoreline, these snails are most active at night and seek shelter in rock crevices during the day. Adapted to an environment that is constantly changing with the ebb and flow of tides, kūpeʻe have mastered the art of resilience and flexibility. Just as kūpeʻe adapt to their ever-changing environment, we strive to foster resilience in our own ecosystems.

An interview with the lei maker, Aunty Wendy

What do lei mean to you?

To me, a lei embodies our culture and traditions, representing a connection to our roots and ancestors who depended on it for sustenance. It’s a symbol of nurturing our land and ocean, which have long provided for our families. Crafting a beautiful lei also reflects the mastery and appreciation of our natural resources.

How would you characterize your bond with plants?

My relationship with plants is one of harmony, recognizing the multifaceted roles they play in our ecosystem. They provide balance, offering themselves for various purposes, from medicinal remedies to practical materials essential for daily life

What guidance might you offer to others seeking to deepen their connection with the plants and landscapes that define their home?

I suggest expressing gratitude to the land for its abundance and being mindful to only take what is necessary. Respecting the intricate balance of nature fosters a deeper understanding and reverence for the environment that sustains us.
