Dr. Diane Ragone, the 2025 recipient of the Fairchild Medal Award for Plant Exploration, is internationally acclaimed for her pioneering contributions to ethnobotany, conservation, and the global promotion of breadfruit. She is the founder and Director Emerita of the Breadfruit Institute at the National Tropical Botanical Garden and holds a PhD in Horticulture from the University of Hawai‘i. Over four decades, she conducted extensive fieldwork across more than 50 Pacific islands, safeguarding breadfruit diversity and traditional knowledge while advancing its use for food security and sustainability.

The National Tropical Botanical Garden awards the prestigious David Fairchild Medal for Plant Exploration individuals who have made exceptional contributions to the field of botanical research or horticulture, and provides the opportunity to draw public attention to the ongoing global crisis of plant extinction.
