Natural Dyes: Turmeric and Butterfly Pea Flower with Isabel Infante

Saturday, May 18, 2024 | 11 am to 2 pm

The Kampong

We invite you to explore The Kampong from the perspective of a botanist-colorist and immerse yourself in a morning of natural dyeing. This year, we will delve into various sessions focusing on tropical plants that produce color and are part of the living collections of the garden.

In May’s Natural Dye Workshop, we will focus on two plants with origins traced back to Southeast Asia: Turmeric and Butterfly Pea Flower. Turmeric yields an intense yellow color, while the Butterfly Pea Flower offers shades ranging from blue to violet.

During the workshop, we will spend the morning exploring and experimenting with natural colors and shibori techniques for fabric dyeing.

This workshop is suitable for individuals aged 16 and above, and all necessary materials are included. Each participant will leave with a 100% cotton bandana in each color.

The event costs $50 for general admission and $40 for NTBG/Kampong members
