The Kampong
Nature is a gifted source of color. By observing our surroundings and drawing inspiration from traditional practices, we can unlock the beauty of natural dyes. In this workshop, we invite you to explore The Kampong through the eyes of a botanist and colorist and immerse yourself in the art of natural dyeing. Participants will work with two natural dyes derived from plants in the garden’s living collections: achiote and turmeric. Throughout the workshop, we’ll experiment with color and practice shibori, a traditional fabric dyeing technique, to create textile patterns.
This workshop is open to participants aged 16 and older, and all materials will be provided. Each attendee will take home a hand-dyed bandana and tote bag. You’re also welcome to bring up to two small garments, such as tops or shirts, made from natural fabrics like cotton, linen, or silk. Please ensure they are pre-washed and slightly damp for the best results.
Rates are $40 for NTBG members, $50 for non-members
