May Kampong Lecture

Thursday, May 17, 2018 – 6:30pm to 8:30pm

Join us on May 17th, 2018 for our monthly lecture series with guest speaker Gary Bremen, Biscayne National Park Ranger.

The lecture “Gifts from the Sea” is all about the things that wash up on the shores of Biscayne National Park, the largest marine park in the US National Park System, elicit a variety of responses: astonishment, disgust, awe, pride and hope are but a few. Join long-time Biscayne National Park Ranger Gary Bremen for a lively and entertaining hands-on look at some of the “Gifts from the Sea” delivered every day, including seashells, sea beans, freedom-seekers and new medicines that offer hope for a variety of ailments.

Gary Bremen is a native South Floridian. As a boy, his parents took him to places with names like Yellowstone, Grand Canyon and Carlsbad, and in so doing, set him on a career path as a National Park Ranger. Thirty-two years into that career (with 23 years of that being at Biscayne), he still finds enormous satisfaction in discovering the lesser-known aspects of the world around him. He is the recipient of the National Park Service’s Freeman Tilden award for excellence in interpretation and the Crystal Owl award for training excellence, as well as a special award from the United States Coral Reef Task Force for his efforts to educate South Floridians about the park and its inhabitants. A proud graduate of the University of Miami, he lives in the little town of Wilton Manors with his husband Roger and their cats Neko, Oliver and Elliott in an urban oasis filled with native plants and wildlife.
The event will begin at 6:30 pm with wine and light bites. The lecture will begin promptly at 7:00 pm.
