Explore the world of loulu—the only palm genus native to Hawaiʻi—with Brendan Stogner of Limahuli Garden and Preserve. Presented by the Kauaʻi Invasive Species Committee as part of their virtual Forest Talk series, this talk will focus on Hawaiʻi’s beloved loulu and why we should care for and appreciate these incredible plants.
There are currently 23 different species of loulu endemic to the Hawaiian Islands. Loulu are found at all four NTBG gardens on Kauaʻi and Maui. Loulu have a long history of practical uses in Hawaiʻi—their thick, fan-shaped fronds used in thatching; trunks used in constructions; and young fruit considered a delicacy. As special as loulu is, their threats are many, including the unfortunate arrival of the highly invasive coconut rhinoceros beetles to Kauaʻi
