McBryde Foreperson

We are seeking a McBryde Foreperson to oversee day to day activities and work assignments of the McBryde and Visitors Center Garden staff.


  • Oversees Horticulture crew in designated area
  • Competent in duties and responsibilities outlined for Lead Gardeners and Horticulture Technicians (those Job Description Duties and Responsibilities are included by reference)
  • Ability to lead by example
  • Helps train new hires & volunteers
  • Coordinates daily activities of the Gardeners with Horticulture Manager or equivalent
  • Oversees daily schedule and assignments of Gardeners
  • Monitors property and identifies projects/areas that need attention
  • Provides timely updates to Horticulture Manger on daily activities, safety concerns, projects, equipment and staff
  • Monitors plant health and conditions: identifies and reports issues Implements solutions as directed
  • Implements sound horticultural practices to achieve plant health, conservation, aesthetic and other goals
  • Implements best practices for Integrated Pest Management, including chemical pesticide applications where needed
  • Manages irrigation systems, including minor repairs and maintenance
  • Ensure staff conducts work in a safe and efficient manner
  • Ensures staff follows Safety Protocols; Conducts safety briefings regularly
  • Immediately corrects any unsafe actions
  • Follows NTBG policy and procedure; ensures staff does the same
  • Communicates time off requests and sick calls with Horticulture Manager
  • Addresses disciplinary issues with staff as needed
  • Coordinates tasks with other Departments as needed
  • Makes decisions in the absence of the Horticulture Manager
  • Competent in basic computer skills (email and Google Docs/Sheets programs)
  • Supports and occasionally leads NTBG programming, including but not limited to hosting volunteer groups & education programs
  • Serves as key role in emergency response; and disaster preparedness and recovery
  • Ability to occasionally operate and direct the operation of heavy equipment (tractor, loader & excavator)

High School diploma or equivalent preferred. Landscaping and/or horticulture experience preferred.

Must be able to communicate clearly with all staff; primarily verbally.

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in oral and sometimes written form. Ability to use good judgment regarding safety.

Must be able to work outdoors all day in variable weather conditions at tasks demanding walking, kneeling, stooping; machinery operation, and lifting heavy objects to 50 pounds or more.

Extensive exposure to outdoor elements including sun, heat, wind and rain. Noise level may be high due to hand tools and heavy machinery in the area. Exposure to hazardous chemicals is frequent.

Ability to identify and treat for plant insect and diseases preferred.  Ability to identify native Hawaiian plant species is preferred.
