Join us in honoring the legacy of Dr. Eleanor Galt Simmons, our county’s first female physician. She served anyone in need with both her medical expertise and her deep commitment to building community.

Inspired by her story, this program explores the historical contributions of women in healthcare – from public health nurses who brought care directly to communities, to the often-marginalized healers who understood wellness as something broader than clinical treatment alone.

Fitting for our garden setting, we’ll also examine how nature and green spaces have shaped health and healing across time and how we might reclaim and expand that connection for more equitable health outcomes today.

Featured perspectives include:

• Christine Ardalan, Nurse, Historian, Author has enjoyed an extensive career in teaching and historical research. Her specialization is the history of nursing in the United States and Florida. She is widely published in the professional literature and her latest book, Nurses Among the Seminoles and Miccosukee, 1934-1971, is soon to be released.
• Joanna Lombard, Professor, a registered architect (Florida) and ACSA Distinguished Professor at the University of Miami School of Architecture with a joint appointment in the Department of Public Health Sciences
• Garrett Rockwell, Miccosukee Tribe of Indians of Florida Embassy Fellow and Anthropology Major at Miami Dade College
• Rhonwyn Ullman Physical and Mental Health Professional who has made extensive use of outdoor/green spaces in her work with clients.
• Dr. Steven Ullman, Professor, Author; Academic Director, Health Executive MBA and MD/MBA Program; Director, Center for Health Management and Policy at The University of Miami
