Tuesday, October 4

Breakfast on own

Please note:

We will not return to the hotel before dinner.

Please wear walking shoes and bring sunscreen.

Please bring a wrap or jacket. Change of shoes, etc. can be stored on the bus.

Please bring your own reusable water bottle.

9:45 a.m. Departure from the Hotel del Coronado

10:45 a.m. – 3:45 p.m. Visit to San Diego Botanic Garden with lunch

Over the decades since SDBG was established, the garden has worked to conserve threatened plants and habitats, including San Diego’s native flora as well as rare plants from around the world. This 37-acre urban oasis with four miles of trails displays more than 5,000 plant species and varieties, including 300 plants for which SDBG is the only garden maintaining a population. SDBG has 15 gardens that represent different regions of the world, 12 demonstration gardens, and the largest public bamboo collection in North America.

4:00 p.m. Departure from San Diego Botanic Garden

4:00 p.m. – 5:30 p.m. Scenic bus tour along the coast to La Jolla

One of the wildest stretches of California coastal land ending at La Jolla, “the jewel” of San Diego. Along the way we’ll see rare Torrey pine trees, growing only in coastal San Diego County, and on Santa Rosa Island and San Miguel Island, offshore from Santa Barbara in Santa Barbara County. 

5:45 p.m. Cocktails and Dinner at the Marine Room, La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club

8:45 p.m. Departure from dinner to the Hotel del Coronado (estimated arrival 9:15 p.m.)

Including reports from all Program Committee meetings held in advance of the Board Meeting and interactive discussions.

11:05 a.m. – 11:10 a.m. Meeting Wrap Up

3:15 p.m. – 4:30 p.m. Walking Tour of the Japanese Friendship Garden in Balboa Park

The Japanese Friendship Garden is an expression of friendship between San Diego and its sister city, Yokohama. Its design is based on centuries-old Japanese techniques adapted to San Diego’s climate and flora and seeks to foster a relationship between humans and nature, providing a respite attuned to Japanese simplicity, serenity, and aestheticism.

4:45 p.m. – 5:45 p.m. Tours of the Mingei International Museum

Dedicated to “art of the people” (mingei) from all eras and cultures of the world, Mingei International Museum shares arts of daily life through dynamic, changing exhibitions of historical and contemporary folk art, craft and design. Mingei’s vibrant collections and exhibitions showcase the finest examples of creative expression from unknown craftsmen to renowned contemporary designers.

5:45 p.m. Cocktails and hors d’oeuvres on the Smoyer-Dickinson Terrace at the Mingei International Museum

7:00 p.m. Departure from Mingei International Museum to the San Diego Yacht Club

7:30 p.m. Dinner at the San Diego Yacht Club

(Cell phones are permitted in Club parking lots and on terraces; please keep ringers on silent or vibrate inside the building. Non-smoking venue.)

9:30 p.m. Departure from dinner to the Hotel del Coronado (estimated arrival 10:00 p.m.)

10:45 a.m. – 4:45 p.m. Visit to the San Diego Zoo with lunch

An urban paradise for all ages, the San Diego Zoo is a must-see in Southern California housing over 12,000 animals of more than 650 species and subspecies on 100 acres in Balboa Park. The Zoo is also an accredited botanical garden, caring for more than 700,000 individual plants. Led by the Zoo’s horticulture staff, we’ll tour behind-the-scenes at the Orchid Greenhouse & Nursery, then time to explore on your own and visit the gift shops.

5:15 p.m. Departure from San Diego Zoo

6:00 p.m. Cocktails and Casual Dinner

Hosted by Trustee Carol Dickinson and Fellow Martin Dickinson at their Point Loma home.

8:30 p.m. Departure from dinner to the Hotel del Coronado
