Basketry has been an integral part of human history, dating back to the dawn of civilization. Across cultures, people have honed this craft by interweaving plant fibers readily available in their environment. Palm trees, which flourish in the tropical climate surrounding us, have served as a valuable resource for creating baskets, hats, and other handcrafted items.
In this workshop, we will explore the versatility of palm leaves as a natural material. You’ll learn one of the foundational techniques for interweaving palm leaves—a skill that forms the basis for more intricate designs. We’ll begin by creating a simple bookmark, and as you gain confidence, you’ll have the opportunity to craft more detailed designs, such as small animals and other shapes. Isabel Infante, a textile artist specializing in natural fibers, will facilitate this workshop. Isabel will guide you through the essential steps of palm basket weaving, ensuring you leave with new skills and a deeper appreciation for sustainable crafts.
Rates are $40 for NTBG members, $50 for non-members
