Lei embody aloha, reflecting deep connections to plants, people, and place. In lei making, one’s intimate bond with the plants used is as significant as the final creation. Join Neal Uno for a talk where you’ll learn how to nurture and care for your very own lei plants. From ʻilima flowers to tī leaves, puakenikeni blossoms to ʻulu leaf sheaths, we’ll explore hallmark lei plants and share expert tips for cultivating them.
*A free lei plant will be offered to participants on a first-come-first-served basis.*
Neal Uno is an Agroforestry Technician at the National Tropical Botanical Garden where he manages the Regenerative Organic Breadfruit Agroforest (ROBA). ROBA demonstrates how breadfruit can be integrated with a multitude of other edible and ornamental plants to increase productivity and enrich the soil. Lei plants are woven into the fabric of ROBA and are often used to supply lei for staff and community celebrations.
