Interviews with the man behind ‘The Translation’ on YouTube
Special Announcement, 09/14/2011
In a five-part series of videos uploaded recently to YouTube, the late E.M. "Monty" Beekman talks about 17th century naturalist Georg Eberhard Rumphius.
Beekman spent years translating Rumphius's work from old Dutch and Latin (entitled Herbarium Amboinense) to English (entitled) The Ambonese Herbal. Making the wealth of information gathered by Rumphius available to present-day scientists was something Beekman had long envisioned when he began the translation for the NTBG.
The six-volume Herbal, co-published by the National Tropical Botanical Garden and Yale University Press, is due to be released in its entirety on September 19 and is available through the Press website at: Yale University Press-use keywords: Ambonese Herbal.
To watch the Beekman interviews, go to: YouTube-Beekman-Ambonese Herbal-Part One. The other four parts are also accessible from that webpage.
