Translation Opens World of Ethnobotanical Treasures
Publications Announcement, 04/23/2011
NTBG is pleased to announce the upcoming release of:

The Ambonese Herbal
a co-publication by Yale University Press and the
National Tropical Botanical Garden

Five decades of ethnobotanical knowledge in the 17th century by naturalist Georgius Rumphius will be available in English this July with the publication of The Ambonese Herbal, a translation from archaic Dutch by the late E.M. `Monty’ Beekman. Chipper Wichman, NTBG’s Director & CEO, called the translation “a crowning achievement from which scholars around the world will benefit for many years to come. It is a testament to two men who lived centuries apart but overcame severe obstacles to share this knowledge.”

“The intervening centuries have seen the loss of much of the local knowledge about plants, the interactions between people and plants and even the plant species themselves. That makes reading Rumphius like ‘going back in a space capsule’ to a lost world,” said noted conservationist Peter Raven.

Pre-orders are being accepted at: yalepress.yale.edu, keywords: ambonese herbal.
