September 19 is Breadfruit Bounty Cookoff Day
Press Release, 09/09/2009
Breadfruit Bounty Cookoff at Southshore Visitors Center
A taste of ‘ulu
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Kalāheo, Kaua‘i, Hawai‘i (September 9, 2009) - Summer is over, the kids are back in school, but there’s still plenty of fun to be had as the National Tropical Botanical Garden (NTBG) holds its first-ever Kaua‘i Breadfruit Bounty Cookoff. Come out and enjoy a celebration of summer’s bounty at the Southshore Visitors Center (across from Spouting Horn) in Po‘ipū on Saturday, September 19th from 11 a.m. - 2 p.m.
Experience breadfruit like never before at this fun-filled family event and taste this important healthy Hawaiian food in a whole new way as Kaua‘i cooks present ‘ulu (breadfruit) appetizers, soups and salads, main dishes, and desserts during the center’s monthly ‘Ohana Day.
Pre-registered breadfruit recipes and dishes will be poked, prodded, tasted, and tested by a panel of judges and ‘ulu experts (in training) including Faye Hirayama, author of a breadfruit cookbook; Glenn Goldsmith, NTBG trustee and founder of Goldsmith Seeds, Inc.; John Ferguson, chef and owner of Kalaheo Café & Coffee Co.; and Pamela Brown, editor of Kaua‘i People in their search for Kaua‘i’s tastiest breadfruit dishes.
Prepared original ‘ulu dishes will be on display from 11-11:30 a.m. with an interactive keiki breadfruit station (11-1 p.m.), a breadfruit presentation by NTBG’s Breadfruit Institute Director Dr. Diane Ragone from 11:30 - 12:30 and contest winner's announcement from 12:30 - 1 p.m. All breadfruit dishes will be offered as tasting samples for a nominal fee on a first-come, first-served basis from 1:30 until pau.
If you've never tried fantastic dishes like warm ‘ulu sashimi carpaccio with Waipā greens, "traditional" roasted ‘ulu with corned beef and "fudge-like" ‘ulu pie with candied ‘ulu or Polynesian breadfruit medley, this is your chance.
For more information, call (808) 742-2433.
National Tropical Botanical Garden is a not-for-profit, non-governmental institution with nearly 2,000 acres of gardens and preserves in Hawai‘i and Florida. Its mission is to enrich life through discovery, scientific research, conservation, and education by perpetuating the survival of plants, ecosystems, and cultural knowledge of tropical regions.
