Press Release, 05/21/2009
First “Mo‘olelo Under the Moon
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Kalāheo, Kaua‘i, HI USA (May 21, 2009) - Limahuli Garden and Preserve in Hā‘ena is offering for the first time ever a moonlight event. “Mo‘olelo Under the Moon,” a new program, kicks off on Saturday evening, June 6, from 7:30-9 p.m. This outdoor series will offer the rare opportunity to learn of Kaua‘i’s cultural history from contemporary keepers of these arts while experiencing the majesty of Limahuli at night. The first talk is Saturday, June 6, featuring Carlos Andrade as the evening’s storyteller. Advance sales are available immediately and proceeds will benefit Limahuli Garden.

Transmission of oral histories via storytelling, music, and dance are among some of most highly esteemed Hawaiian arts. Dr. Andrade is a master storyteller, author, musician, and director of the Kamakakuokalani Center For Hawaiian Studies, UH-Manoa. Some of the stories he will share are from his book Hā‘ena: through the eyes of kupuna.

Cost is $35 if purchased by June 5, $40 on day of event, with $5 off for Garden members. Children under 13 when accompanied by parent are free. Call the Garden’s Visitor Center at 826-1053 to reserve space and pay by credit card, or stop by the Center. Limahuli is open Tuesday-Saturday, 9:30 a.m.-4 p.m. and is located on Kūhio Highway approximately 1/4 mile before Ke‘e Beach.

Attendees are asked to bring a beach chair or mat. Because of limited parking and to be eco-conscious, carpooling is suggested.

Future offerings of “Mo‘olelo Under the Moon” will be on Friday, July 3 and Saturday, August 1 with details announced closer to those dates. Visit limahuli.ntbg.org on the Web to learn more about these and other activities and offerings at Limahuli.

Limahuli Garden and Preserve is one of five gardens and three preserves of the nonprofit National Tropical Botanical Garden. NTBG, a non-governmental institution, is supported primarily through donations and grants. Its mission is to enrich life through discovery, scientific research, conservation, and education by perpetuating the survival of plants, ecosystems, and cultural knowledge of tropical regions.
