The Art of Traditional Hawaiian Kapa (barkcloth) Making
by respected cultural practitioner and educator

in the Canoe Garden of McBryde Garden
This intensive six-hour workshop will include lunch and refreshments. Limited to 12 participants. Sabra Kauka, a master kapa craftswoman, will lead the group into the Canoe Garden, located in the Lāwa`i Valley. The day will open will an oli (opening chant), an introduction to wauke (Broussonetia papyrifera)-the plant used to make kapa, weeding, cleaning, gathering, stripping, pounding, an instruction on design techniques, and closing chant.
Participants will need to bring their own: carving knife, drawing pencil, sketchbook, gardening gloves, ‘opihi (limpet) shells-the larger the better.
Registration is being handled at the Southshore Visitors Center in Po‘ipū.
