by Dr. Michelle Williams
Michele Williams, Ph.D., RPA is the Director and Terrestrial Archaeologist for the Southeastern Region of the Florida Public Archaeology Network. Her specialty is the use of plants by prehistoric Native Americans.
The Windover site is an Archaic mortuary pond located near the east coast of Florida. It produced the well-preserved remains of 168 individuals, allowing a look at life and health 7,000 years ago. By correlating medicinal plants identified among the Windover burials with the pathologies identified on their remains, medicinal plant usage among this population during Florida’s Archaic may be inferred.
