Cutnut is a medium sized tropical evergreen tree which can reach 24 m (80 ft) tall. Leaves are large, simple, lanceolate, and arranged in a a whorl at each node; the dark green, glossy blade is 8.5-26 inches long and 2-8 inches wide; the petiole is short and thick.
Flowers are produced at the branch ends in dense, pendulous, racemose clusters 12-43 inches long, each with up to 150 bisexual flowers. Flowers range in color from white to yellow sometimes red. the buds are greenish white, pink, or red in color. Multiple fruits are produced on the pendulous rachis. When mature the fruits are 1-4 inches long and oblong to obovoid, green to purplish in color, and each contains a single white, oblong-elliptic seed. The seeds are edible and nutritious.
