First International Symposium on Breadfruit Research and Development.

The First International Symposium on Breadfruit Research and Development aims to increase awareness of the importance of breadfruit in the food systems of the African, Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) region and to open up opportunities for greater use of breadfruit diversity through sharing information and establishing research and development priorities.

The Symposium took place in Nadi, Fiji 16-19 April 2007. Participants came from 23 countries: American Samoa, Australia, B?nin, Fiji, Ghana, Italy, Jamaica, Kiribati, Netherlands, New Caledonia, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Pohnpei, Federated States of Micronesia, Samoa, Seychelles, Sri Lanka, Tanzania, Tonga, Trinidad and Tobago, Tuvalu, USA and Vanuatu. Participants included researchers from national, regional, and international organizations, universities, government ministries, NGOs, and the private sector.

Five major themes provided the focus for the Symposium, namely: 1) Breadfruit in Society, 2) Diversity and Conservation, 3) Germplasm Exchange and Crop Improvement, 4) Production and Production Constraints, and 5) Product Development and Marketing.

Breadfruit Conservation Strategy

Breadfruit is one of the Annex 1 crops covered by The International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture. The Global Crop Diversity Trust developed a breadfruit conservation strategy in 2007.
