Breadfruit - A Tree of Importance to Hawaii
The Breadfruit Institute and Jim Wiseman, DigitalMedia Hawaii/Pacific, recently completed a video entitled "Breadfruit - A Tree of Importance to Hawaii." The video covers breadfruit`s relevance to Hawaii and its connections to other Pacific island cultures, especially Tahiti, Samoa, and Micronesia. Also covered is breadfruit`s value for food security as a delicious and nutritious food; the tree`s aesthetic contribution to urban landscapes; and the work of the Breadfruit Institute to promote the conservation and use of breadfruit for food and reforestation.
This information is relevant to many tropical nations where breadfruit has the potential to play an important role in alleviating hunger, supporting sustainable agriculture, agroforestry, reforestation, and economic development.
Funding for this video was provided by:
Kaulunani Urban & Community Forestry Grants Program, State of Hawaii, and the Pikake Fund, Hawaii Community Foundation.
We thank everyone who was interviewed or demonstrated cultural and horticultural practices related to breadfruit and its importance as a sustainable food for Hawaii and beyond.
