Geographic Origin of Accession: Samoa
Locality: Upolu
Other Names: Mei puou, Mos en Samoa, Uto Samoa
Distribution: Puou is a popular variety throughout Polynesia, Micronesia and Melanesia. Also found in Australia, southern Florida and possibly the Caribbean.
Notes: Accessions collected in Samoa, Tonga and Vanuatu. Tends to be a shorter, more compact tree than most varieties. Produces numerous root shoots. The white flesh is solid and dense and has a firm, yet tender, texture when cooked. The Samoa Ministry of Agriculture began exporting fresh fruit to New Zealand in 2003. Can be grown under atoll conditions and in sandy, coastal soils.
